The school of mechanical engineering is formerly named as  mechanical engineering  department at Qinghai University, was founded in 1958. It is one of the earliest engineering departments at Qinghai University. During the nearly half a century development, the concepts of running a school of "The teaching of foundation science is important, the practice training of the students should be pay attention, the innovation ability of the students should be trained" were developed. Combined with regional economic development needs, the disciplines of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering have been established and developed. In 1996, the provincial key discipline of machinery manufacturing process and equipment was identified as the key discipline by Qinghai Education Department. In 2005, the master degree program of Materials Science was approved by Ministry Education of China.On November 26, 2010, the name was changed as School of Mechanical Engineering at Qinghai University. The key industrial training center of basic industry was approved by Qinghai Education Department. In 2011, the master degree program of Mechanical Engineering was approved by Ministry Education of China. In 2011 the National Engineering Research Center of High Performance Light Metal Alloys and Forming was named by National Development and Reform Commission of China. In 2012, the Provincial Key Discipline of Materials Forming and Control Engineering was identified as the key discipline by Qinghai Education Department. Qinghai Provincial Key Laboratory of New Light Alloys was named by Qinghai Science &Technology Department in 2012. In 2013, The Qinghai Provincial Engineering and Technology R & D Center of High Performance Light Metal Alloys and Forming was named by Qinghai Science &Technology Department.

  There are 89 faculty and staff in our school Including 74 full-time teachers, 16 professors. One professor won the 6th China innovation talent award.

 Currently there are 1538 undergraduate students and 75graduate students. In the past five years, the employment rate of undergraduates has remained above 88%, and the employment rate of postgraduates is 100%.

  Over the past five years we have undertaken more than 40 research projects, including National Fundamental Research Program of China, International S&T Cooperation Project supported by Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. One of the projects won the second prize in the scientific and technological progress of Qinghai Province. The distinguish research fields of magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy and composite materials, light metal plastic forming, photoelectric functional materials, advanced medical robot technology, CNC machine tool key technology, digital design and information system have been formed in our school.

  6 Laboratories were developed, including computer modeling and simulation, physical simulation, material fabrication and plastic forming, testing and characterization of materials, mechanical and electrical control and basic industrial training, the laboratories cover an area of 6,200 square meters, the total assets of experimental equipment is 80 million Yuan.
